What You Need to Know Before You Go
If you’re heading to Playa Flamingo or Potrero from Liberia Airport, you might notice that Google Maps or Waze suggests the Monkey Trail (Highway 911) as the fastest route. But before you trust your GPS blindly, it’s essential to understand the challenges of this shortcut. A wireless battery pack will come in handy if you’re traveling long distances.
The Risks of the Monkey Trail
While the Monkey Trail may look convenient on a map, its reality is far from smooth. This unpaved road includes steep sections, rough terrain, and a river crossing that’s downright treacherous during the rainy season (May–November). In fact, during heavy rains, the river becomes impassable, stranding vehicles and leading to costly rental car recovery fees.
Even in much of the dry season, the trail requires a sturdy 4×4 vehicle and a driver experienced with rugged conditions. This route has a private bridge you can pay $10 USD to cross instead of driving through the river, but the rest of the road still demands caution.
Check Your Route
Since the Monkey Trail is often the default recommendation on Google Maps and Waze, many travelers unknowingly find themselves on this perilous path. Double-check your route before setting out. If it takes you along Highway 911, consider rerouting through the main highway via Belen and Huacas. While it might add a few extra minutes to your journey, it’s far safer and much less stressful.
